The Artisans

Nubia is a region along the Nile river split between southern Egypt and northern Sudan. While Nubia was the seat of one of the earliest civilizations of ancient Africa, Nubia was divided between Egypt and Sudan in the 1950s. Then in the 1960s, 100,000 to 120,000 Egyptian and Sudanese Nubians were resettled to make room for Lake Nasser, a man-made lake created after the construction of the High Dam in Aswan.

Modern Nubians speak their own Nubian languages. Whereas Arabic was once only learned by Nubian men who traveled for work, it is increasingly being learned by Nubian women who have access to school, radio and television, and who are working outside the home in increasing numbers.
