The Association for the Protection of the Environment (A.P.E.) is a not-for-profit organization that works with the informal garbage collectors of Cairo, known as the Zabaleen in Arabic. One of A.P.E.'s programs aims to provide women with skills that would empower them to earn their own living. A.P.E. trains women in these communities on various crafts, according to their talents and personal abilities.
Paper crafts constitute one of the products created by these women who reuse paper obtained from companies to create beautiful recycled paper greeting cards, gift bags and other beautiful paper products. Paper for some of those products is combined with flower petals, shredded jeans, or cotton to generate unique patterns & textures. These paper products are also often decorated with some form of embroidery.
