Upcycled Metal | Haiti
Haitian metal sculpture, a vibrant tradition ignited by Georges Liautaud in the 1950s, begins with discarded steel oil drums. Artists cut the lids, split the sides, and burn out impurities before flattening the drums into sheets. Designs are chalked on and crafted with hand tools through cutting, hammering, embossing, and bending, reflecting daily life, imaginative themes, and Vodou motifs.
Despite challenges like the 2010 earthquake and recent gang violence, Haiti’s artistic spirit endures and this meticulous process continues to thrive.
Dandarah started partnering with Haitian metal artists in 2023, and we continue to grow our inspiring metal art collection.
